Our local area

What's around the corner?

During this geography topic, we will be learning about the UK with a specific focus on our local area. We will learn about the continents and oceans of the world and countries within the UK in order to find where we are as well as exploring the human and physical features found in our local area when we go on local walks. We will study maps and aerial images of familiar places and conduct a fieldwork study around how the people surrounding our school move from one place to another, gathering data and using what we find to answer questions.

Who's the king of the castle?

During this history topic we will learn about the changes in Conisbrough castle and the families it belonged to before English Heritage owned it. We will discover how the castle has changed over time from the materials that have been used to build it to its uses. We will visit the castle to explore the grounds and the keep and engage in an immersive tour to learn even more amazing facts about our local history.

During this history topic we will be learning about important people in history: Neil Armstrong and Rosa Parks. We will study timelines of their lives, why they are remembered today and the impact they had on our history and how they have shaped our present and future lives.

Animals Including Humans

What kind we find in animal kind?

During this science topic we will be learning about animals including humans. We will learn about animal classifications: mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish as well as their diets: herbivores, omnivores and carnivores. We will learn about the human body; our bones and our senses. We will scientifically explore the question: which animal has the most similar body to us? During this topic we will visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Here you will find lots of information about Rowan Class. At Mexborough St John's our children study four main topics throughout the year. Things to remember:

Children MUST bring their reading books and reading diary EVERY day.
Outside PE will take place every Tuesday and the children MUST bring their outdoor PE kit.
Indoor PE will take place every Friday and children MUST have their indoor PE kit.
PE days may be subject to change and we encourage your child to bring their kit on Monday and keep it at school all week.

Home Learning:

Please listen to your child read their school book at least 3 times per week (just 5 minutes per time is fine for now!).
Children can access Numbots from home- please see class teacher if you need another login providing
